Colete refrescante Amarelo - Hurtta

Our planet is a one-of-a-kind playground where dogs and dog owners can enjoy nearly endless adventures. And dogs seem to enjoy their time outdoors even more than we do. Running, jumping, rolling around, exploring, all with little care about dirt and mud. Dogs are going to play, and get dirty. The purpose of dog apparel and gear is to help them, and you, enjoy your outdoor time to its fullest – in any weather.
But know this, even the best technical, breathable materials won’t perform very well unless they are clean. You don’t need to wash your Hurtta apparel and gear after every outdoor activity, often just allowing them to air dry is enough. However, mud and salt water will weaken the materials over time, which is why we have put together some helpful care instructions. It won’t take too much of your time and keep in mind, when you take care of your dog’s favourite apparel and gear, the way that you care for your own things, it will perform better, last longer, and the fun times that you enjoy together can keep on rolling.

Laundry bag
Take better care of your Hurtta apparel and gear with the wash and store laundry bag that takes better care of your washing machine and the planet.
A wash bag extends the life of dog clothes.
A good wash bag also prevents dog hair from getting into the washing machine. You can help this by brushing off any dander and dog hair that is on your dog’s clothes before putting the item in the wash bag.
Remember not to stuff the wash bag too full to avoid detergent residue build-up on fabrics. Liquid laundry detergent will yield the best results. Hair and lint that accumulates inside the wash bag is easy to remove from the bag and you can discard it in your mixed-waste receptacle. But not in bio-waste collection, so microplastics do not end up in nature.
A clever little piece of foam that comes with the wash bag also helps to keep dog hair out of your washing machine. It can either be placed inside the wash bag or inside the washing machine. During the wash cycle, the foam will collect loose dog hair.
A wash bag makes doing laundry easier and it’s more environmentally friendly as it reduces the release of harmful microplastics from synthetic fibre fabrics into waterways.
Laundry day

Dog apparel and gear needs to be washed too
Always follow the washing instructions on each product’s care instructions label. Some Hurtta products can only be washed by hand, while others can go in the washing machine, as long as you use the correct water temperature and spin cycles specified on the product’s label.
Remember to use a fragrance-free and allergy-friendly detergent so that the product won’t irritate you dog after washing. We also suggest an environmentally friendly detergent so that it burdens nature as little as possible.

Quick pre-wash prep
Remove any hair, mud, and sand with a towel or shake the product outside before you wash the item. Secure buckles, zippers, and any Velcro strips before washing. Also, loosen any cords or drawstrings to allow the entire product to be washed. If you have shortened any drawstrings yourself, make a knot at the end so as not to lose the cord inside the product during washing.

Set your washing machine for success
Select the appropriate amount of water for your load and add detergent as instructed. It’s important to adjust the water temperature and choose a gentle or delicate wash cycle that is suitable for your Hurtta product. A wash bag can also help to further protect the garment from unnecessary wear and tear during the wash cycle.
Spin cycles should be used at either low speeds or not at all, again not to cause unnecessary damage to the product. After washing, make sure that there are no detergent residues leftover on the product. If there is, simply rinse the product again.
If the product has a waterproof shell, the use of fabric softener is not recommended as it can damage the waterproofing and weaken the product’s water resistance. Instead of fabric softener you can use a small amount of laundry vinegar or a distilled white vinegar-water mixture, which will clean and freshen the product, and it is also an environmentally friendly choice.

How to wash by hand
Hand washing is especially recommended for the following apparel:
- Life jackets
- Thermal, foil-lined products
- Collars, harnesses and leashes
- Boots
Machine washing the products mentioned above may damage the products or the washing machine itself. In particular, lifejackets are often exposed to salty seawater and thus it is recommended to rinse them with fresh water as soon as possible after each use.
Products with a thermal foil layer should be turned inside out if necessary to protect the foil layer from wear and tear caused by washing. They should also be air dried.
A large bucket is great for washing items by hand, which will allow you to wash the entire garment and do any necessary scrubbing. Especially dirty items should be pre-soaked to help remove any stubborn dirt or mud. After washing, remember to rinse thoroughly to remove any detergent residues.

Dry time
You’re almost there. You followed the instruction label on your garment or gear and gave the item a proper washing. Next comes drying. Check the care instructions again to determine whether or not the product can be dried in a clothes dryer. Most products are not suitable for drying in a tumble dryer, for example due to metal hardware that could cause damage to the dryer. Also, the heat of the dryer could loosen any of the product’s taped seams or harm the product’s waterproofing.
Hanging your apparel and gear to dry is also a more ecological option than drying in a clothes dryer, so we recommend always air-drying Hurtta products on a clothesline or hanger. However, they should not be hung from the product’s drawstrings or leg loops as their elasticity may be lessened or cords could break as some products, such as jackets, may be quite heavy when wet.
For thicker, waterproof gear such as overalls, turn the item inside out for faster drying. You can dry the equipment indoors or outdoors, but it’s best to avoid direct sunlight.

Odour removal

Prevent
Dog apparel and gear can get a little smelly at times. In addition to dirt or mud clinging to the dog’s coat and its apparel, the natural oils in the dog’s fur can cause an unpleasant, musty smell in the dog’s apparel.
You can help to prevent odours by regularly washing your dog’s apparel and gear. Also, wash and air-dry seasonal gear before storing, even if it doesn’t look dirty. This way they won’t start to smell and will be ready for use when they are needed again next year. Simply follow the instructions on the product’s care label and the washing tips noted above.

Ventilate
If a washed and well-dried product starts to smell, you should first ventilate it outdoors as much as possible, for example on a hanger. Ventilation is particularly effective in cooler weather, but fresh air can also help with odours in summer. But avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight.

Rewash
If ventilation does not work, the product should be washed again carefully using detergent. Especially with items that are used a lot, dirt can be quite stubborn, but a thorough soaking can make cleaning the item easier. Instead of fabric softener, try laundry vinegar. Afterwards, check that the product is clean, properly rinsed, and air-dried.

Freeze away odours
If the product is still a bit smelly after washing, drying, and ventilating, you can try to remove the odour by freezing the item, as the freezing temperature may kill bacteria and microbes that can cause odours.
You can either put the product in a freezer or outside in freezing winter weather. Usually a couple of hours is enough, but if necessary you can try even longer. The more airy you keep the item during freezing, the better it will neutralise odours and refresh the item. A tightly packed product should be kept in the freezer for a longer duration.

Try vinegar
Vinegar can also effectively neutralise odours. You can use a spray bottle to spray the wet or dry garment with a water-distilled white vinegar solution. Always dilute vinegar with water.
After spraying, squeeze out or shake off any excess liquid from the item and dry it properly. The smell of vinegar will evaporate rather quickly as the product dries, so don’t be alarmed by it.
If the product smells especially bad throughout the process, you can add more laundry vinegar to the water. In this case, the product should be soaked entirely in the water-vinegar mix. After washing, rinse and air-dry the item outdoors as needed.

Try deodorising sprays
There are several different odour-eliminating sprays available on the market. Always make sure they are suitable for textiles, and especially for products that feature technical and waterproof layers.
Deodorising sprays kill bacteria. They are often developed for products that are difficult to wash. Always carefully read the deodorising product’s instructions and determine whether or not the spray is recommended for use on apparel and gear that comes into contact with skin and other surfaces.
Also, check whether the spray contains fragrances, so that the spray does not irritate the dog or the dog’s skin. And please choose a deodorant spray that is environmentally friendly.

Hurtta products are designed to withstand both time and wear because dogs play, work, and train hard. The better the quality, the longer the garment or gear will last, greatly reducing the product's environmental impact over the long haul. That's why we say, the longer you love it, the better it is for the planet.
We're also committed to reducing the environmental impact of our packaging materials by utilising sustainable packaging whenever possible. Our goal is to make all of our packaging sustainable by 2028.
We encourage other dog owners to adopt sustainable practices too. When we use our products to their fullest, repair them when possible, and recycle them after a full usage life, we reduce our dependence on landfills, conserve raw materials, and ultimately protect our common playground – our planet – for future generations of dogs and dog people.
Sort & recycle Hurtta products and packaging

Hurtta dog apparel and gear make great hand-me-downs
We all know how quickly dogs grow, which means they will inevitably grow out of their apparel. But just because a product is too small for your dog, doesn’t mean that it’s too small for another. Ask friends and family or look for an appropriately sized dog at your local dog park.
If your product is in good enough shape, you can even sell or gift it because Hurtta products are often in high demand. You can sell them at traditional flea markets or online dog flea markets. Even if your Hurtta product needs a few repairs, it most likely has a lot of life in it and can be used for a good while longer by the next little adventurer.
If your Hurtta product is no longer suitable for use, or its materials are not repairable, you can drop it off at a textile recycling point. For the recycling of reusable textiles, look for bins marked “clothing and accessories”. But note that your product should be mostly intact and clean to be accepted.
If the garment is too worn and no longer usable, please clean and tightly pack it in a plastic bag and drop it off at your local textile disposal collection site. Dirty, unrepairable apparel and gear should be disposed of in mixed waste bins.

Sort & recycle those packaging materials
Recycling packaging materials is much better for the environment than simply throwing them away. That way, the raw materials can be reused and you help to conserve natural resources. Simply follow the recycling symbols on the product’s packaging for how to sort and recycle it.
Sort hanging tags, cardboard hangers, and brown paper bags from e-commerce orders into cardboard collection bins. There is no need to remove any tape, hooks, or labels. The brown paper string of the hanging tags also belongs in the cardboard recycling bin, but any woven strings belong in the mixed waste bin.
You can identify packaging approved for cardboard packaging recycling by the codes printed in the triangle recycling symbol, e.g. cardboard and paper
packaging PAP 21, PAP 22, and corrugated cardboard packaging PAP 20.

Sort & recycle protective plastic bags
Sort and recycle plastic bags used to protect products during transport in plastic recycling collection bins. The plastic protective bag must be clean, but there is no need to remove tape or stickers before recycling. You can identify packaging approved for plastic packaging recycling by the codes printed in the triangle recycling symbol, e.g. LDPE 4, and PP 05.

Anything remaining is considered mixed waste
There won’t be much left but any remaining parts of the packaging should be sorted in mixed waste collection bins. For example, the nylon cord and black hanging hook of the hanging tag, or the elastic cord that holds the product in place on the cardboard hanger. If the product comes with a small, moisture-reducing silica gel pack, it too belongs in the mixed waste bin.

Before it goes, consider if it can be reused
Before disposing of any packaging material in a mixed waste bin, think if it might be able to be used in some other way. For example, a rubber band as a hair tie. Read more to find other clever ways to repurpose packaging materials. Nature-loving doggos will surely appreciate it.
Paw towels.
Cut suitably large pieces of the product's lining fabric. Sewing the edges on a sewing machine will prevent the edges from coming loose. Use on muddy paws when your dog comes in from outside.
Reflective scarf.
Cut a suitably sized triangular piece of the product's outer fabric, salvaging the reflective print. If necessary, sew the edges. Remove the rubber cord from the product collar or other fastening point. Fold and sew the long side of the triangle so that a space is formed for threading the rubber cord. Adjust the length of the cord to the length of the dog's neck with extra room for comfort and connect the ends of the cord with a knot. If you wish, you can cut another piece of the same size from the outer fabric and sew the pieces together. This inside section of the scarf may be finished the same way.
Hanging reflectors
(Slightly more challenging to make).
Cut two round or triangular pieces, for example, from the product's outer fabric, salvaging the reflective print. Put the right sides of the pieces together and sew the edges, leaving a turning hole of about 2-3 cm. Position the reflector so that the seams remain inside. Fill the reflector with product wadding. Remove the rubber cord from the product collar or other fastening point. Make a 5-10 cm long loop of rubber cord and tie the ends together. Place a knot inside and sew the hole closed. Do a few reinforcement stitches on top of the cord. Attach your new reflector to a dog harness or leash or your own bag or backpack.
Reflective patches.
For example, cut a round or triangular piece of the outer fabric of the broken product, salvaging the reflective print. Repair another broken Hurtta product or other garment by sewing a reflective patch over the torn area. The area may also be fastened with adhesive tape, but it may not withstand heavy wear and tear and multiple washings.
Dog toys.
Soft pull toys for dogs.
Cut three strips of material from the upper or lining fabric suitable for the dog's size. The wider the strips, the thicker the toy becomes, and correspondingly, the longer they are, the longer the toy you can make. Tie the strips together so you can braid them. Stop braiding when there are more than 5cm of strips left and make a knot at the end. Do not leave dogs unattended with toys.
Dog rope / leash toys.
You can make these toys from old rope or strap leashes. Cut out the metal parts. Burn the ends of the straps or ropes to prevent them from unwinding. Then select the toy you would like to make. For some instructions you will need two leashes. The instructions work best for leashes made from a 180 cm long leash. Do not leave dogs unattended with toys.
Soft toys for dogs.
You will need a sewing machine. Cut two pieces of the quilted fabric into your desired shape. Obviously a toy made of outer fabric will be more durable than using a lining fabric. Turn the right sides together and sew the pieces together, leaving a space of about 4 cm. Turn the stitch and fill it with cotton wool. Cut the desired length, at least 15cm, from the belt of the jacket. Slide the ends of the tape inside the opening and fold the edges. Sew the opening closed and make several back and forth stitches as reinforcement so that the ribbon ends withstand boisterous play. You can make several different shaped toys with or without ribbons. Do not use plastic or metal parts. Do not leave dogs unattended with toys.
Rubber hair loops / Rubber braids.
Remove the rubber cords from the packaging or the damaged Hurtta product. Cut about 15 cm pieces of rubber cord. Burn the ends of the rubber cord so that the overlay does not come loose. Tie the ends of the cord together and use it as a hair loop. If you have a hot glue gun, connect the ends of the rubber cord with hot glue, allow the glue to dry and use it as a hair loop. Never leave glue guns unattended.
Decorative hair loop.
Follow the instructions for a rope toy and make a monkey's fist knot out of rubber bands or elastic straps. Then connect the ends of the rubber cord with either a knot or hot glue. Never leave glue guns unattended.

Hurtta products are designed with the environment in mind. They are also built tough for long-lasting use and enjoyment. The goal is to think long-term for the sake of dogs, people and the planet. And to encourage care, including maintenance and repair, reuse by handing down products to other dogs, and recycling to properly dispose of products at the end of their life.

Repaired in a wag of a tail
Hurtta encourages you to aim for a long service life for your products. To repair, maintain, recycle and reuse. However, no product lasts forever and damage does happen. Sometimes the product you like simply wears out in a certain place, sometimes it can happen that the jacket is ripped to shreds.

Fixing a broken product starts with a proper scrub.
Clean the entire product or just the part to be repaired according to the washing instructions by hand or in the washing machine. If it seems that the product will tear more in the washing machine, wash it by hand. Allow the product to dry properly, making it easy to handle.
JACKETS

Repair tears in the seam or fabric of the product.
Inside the product you will find a repair opening, through which you can easily repair the torn fabric or seam. The repair opening is indicated by the “Hurtta repair” tag and by the colour of the sewing thread, which is a different colour than the rest of the product stitching.
The stitch in the repair opening is easy to cut or remove, and you can do so using sharp scissors, for example. After unravelling the seam, you can access the inside of the product through the opening. From the inside of the product, you can repair the torn seam or fabric. You can strengthen the sewing point by adding an adhesive repair patch.
After the repair, close the repair opening by sewing it.

Repairing a tear in the outer fabric with the repair patch.
Repairing a torn outer fabric is easy with the self-adhesive Hurtta repair patch. Sew the edges of the outer fabric of the torn product together by hand with a few stitches. This makes it easier to attach the repair patch as the pieces stay in place. Choose a suitable sized Hurtta patch for the area to be repaired, so that it covers the torn section and at least 1 cm over the torn seam.
Spread the product on a flat surface, remove the adhesive repair patch from the protective paper and attach it over the hole by pressing.
Patch Repair

Repair a jacket's broken quick-snap buckle.
Measure the width of the belt and order a new buckle from the Hurtta online store to replace the damaged one. Are both sides of the buckle damaged, or would replacing one side suffice? If both sides need to be replaced, we recommend contacting a local tailor.
Replacing just one side of the buckle on the belt strap is easy to change yourself. The end of the belt strap is finished with a stitch. Remove the stitches or cut the end of the strap. If you are cutting the strap, finish by burning the edge to prevent the threads from unwinding further. Remove the broken part, replace it with a new buckle piece, and thread the belt strap once again. The end of the strap does not need to be sewn onto the adjustment
buckle.

Repair jacket leg loops that are too long or overstretched.
Jacket leg loops may become too long for the dog if they are overly stretched. The leg loops are easy to shorten with a knot. If the knot harms the dog, rubs or tangles the dog's hair or coat, it is a good idea to shorten the leg loops by sewing. If the elasticity of the leg loops is completely stretched, you can replace the leg loops completely. We recommend that you consult a professional.
Restoring water resistance.
Heavy use and multiple washes can weaken a product’s effectiveness to repel water over time. Applying a water-repellent treatment extends the life of rain gear and prevents the winter product fabrics from getting soaked, keeping your dog warm for longer.
Choose a water-repellent product suitable for fabrics. Follow the product instructions. Note that taped membrane products are not suitable for tumble drying.
Also, check if the product contains fragrances to ensure it doesn’t irritate your dog or its skin. When selecting a product, also consider its environmental friendliness.
HARNESSES

Repair a harness's broken quick-snap buckle.
If the end of the tape is not attached by stitches, thread the broken buckle part off the strap, replace it with a new buckle part, and thread the belt strap back. The end of the belt strap is finished with a stitch. Remove the stitches or cut the end of the strap. If you are cutting the strap, finish by burning the edge to prevent the threads from unwinding further.
Remove the broken part, replace it with a new buckle piece, and thread the belt strap once again. The end of the strap does not need to be sewn onto the adjustment buckle.
